LA Versus NYC Fashion

I wrote an article over a year listing our country’s least fashionable cities (https://jnormanpost.com/2013/10/02/the-9-worst-dressed-cities/), and to my surprise (at the time (per my research)), I found LA to be one of the least fashionable cities.  I can’t exactly deem it brutally unfashionable, because everyone has caught on to the fashion bug.  I was just way ahead of the game.  Now, most sensible men realize it is wise to put forth some effort in the presentation of one’s self.  I’m giving you bandwagoners the golf clap right now.

But seriously, out here, fashion has progressed since that article posting.  However, I understand the lack there of.  People are a walking cliche out here.  They move here because they want to be an actor.  They think they can act because they’ve been told they’re good looking.  So a majority of people (limited to areas) out here are good looking and in shape.  That being said, you see a sense of idiocy and vanity in plenty of douches (men and women) out here.  Vanity and shallowness are two of the most frustrating things to me.  We don’t need to see you taking selfies on Instagram because you look good in a moment, or because you’re flying first class, or because you woke up like that, or because your tits look good in that bra, or because you did your hair different, or because you’re working out.  For fuck sake, if I see one more video or picture of people working out…  It’s the 2015, everyone is in shape!  Get over yourselves.  If you look good, and need to take a selfie, make it a funny one.  Or keep it on SnapChat so it’s gone after a few seconds.  The more you post these things the more eye rolls you’re getting and people who are recognizing your sheer and utter tackiness.

(That rant is absolutely not directed to LA specifically)

Okay, let’s get back on track.  The weather here allows people to care less about their appearance.  Jeans and a T shirt are quite common.  And I’m very okay with that attire.  But just ditch the flip flops.  Seriously.  If people are confident that they are good looking, and that they are in shape, jeans and a T shirt are all they need.  I think most of the world has caught on to avoid the Jersey Shore trends and Ed Hardy stuff, but I don’t doubt there was plenty of that out here at one point.  So for fashion, New York, you win.  You win by a dramatic figure.  Weather keeps you wanting to try new trends, dress for different seasons, and so on.  Out here it’s so much more beach attire and lazy dressed individuals.  I’m okay with it.

‘Girls’ Butt-Play Moment From Last Night: HBO Pushes

I don’t watch the show, but I have seen a bit of it here and there, and may consider getting into it.  Last night, a moment I’ve been predicting would happen to my buddies, came onto air and stunned a few people.  Girls star, Allison Williams, daughter of lead NBC Nightly News anchor Brian Williams, had her butt eaten like a cupcake in last night’s episode.  Pardon my French.  I don’t believe I have young readers so, this post shouldn’t cross too many lines.  Sorry mom.

Here’s the unedited GIF (NSFW) http://cdn2.crushable.com/wp-content/uploads/2015/01/Allison-Williams-getting-her-butt-eaten-Girls-January-2015-GIF.gif

Thoughts?  Too much?  Why am I posting this?  I don’t know.  It’ll probably come down after I get a few text messages from friends or relatives saying that it’s not appropriate.  But hey, anyone with HBO is and was able to see it.  So the question is, will Game of Thrones be able to top this raunchy erotica with their upcoming season?  Or after seeing it, they were probably all like, “Oh oh!  Great idea!  Let’s have our favorite character receive butt play from two women, then brutally murder all three once the scene is done?!”

I guess I’m just trying to see how people feel about this?  Will it lead people to experiment more?  Will it lead people to judge less? Will it just push TV producers to go as far as they can until it is officially deemed porn.

I apologize to my readers who may not want to see this, don’t get used to these types of posts.

Golden Globes, The Roast of Bill Cosby

The Golden Globes were as you’d imagine.  So, rather than post who was best dressed and who was worst, I figured you could Google that on several other sites.

What caught my attention was Tina Fey and Amy Poehler lighting up Bill Cosby.  They should have gone harder.  Here is there minute roast of Cosby (I referred to him by name rather than lighting him up with rapist-like names):

Pretty good.  Like I said, could have/should have gone harder.  This could be an OJ type-thing.  Maybe he’ll get busted for something far more petty in the long run.

Don’t drug people.

It Was a Catch and We All Know It

Dez caught it.  End of story.  He caught it, he took three damn steps while in control.  He caught the ball.

I am not a Cowboys fan, but I don’t mind Romo and I like DeMarco Murray (probably because he helped win me one of my fantasy leagues this year.  I have never once rooted for Dez Bryant.  I always really couldn’t stand him.  However, after watching yesterday’s game you’d have to have no soul to not feel sympathetic for him.  Let me play it out.

You’ve got the best running back in the game.  It’s 4th and short.  A safe option would be to run the ball up the gut.  Another option: kick a field goal.  Another: somehow Chris Collinsworth thought punting was a possibility (usually he’s smart).  The Cowboys decided to go for it, and go for it all.  Romo throws a decent ball and Dez makes a great play.  I do not believe he was reaching for the end zone, but I do still believe it was a clean catch.  His momentum lead him to fall forward in sort of a crawling motion.  This is what lead to the, “Reaching” action we see as the ball comes out.  Remember though, it came out after the man took 3 FUCKING STEPS.  I feel for you Dallas.

Now some of you will be like, “Oh the got away with a call against Detroit so I don’t feel bad for them.”  That’s shit.  The no call was the right call last week.  Dallas.  You got hosed.  We Buffalo/California people understand.

Facial Hair in the Workplace

I was raised with the understanding that if you want to be seen as professional and presentable, you shave your face.  Times, they are uh changing.  Rules once consisted as such:

  1. If you are employed, you show up clean shaven everyday
  2. If you are interviewing, you show up clean shaven
  3. If you attend a private school, you shave
  4. If you want to look presentable and professional, you shave
  5. When in doubt, shave

Today’s Rules:

  1. Fuck every rule above

I turn on the TV and I see ESPN reporters like Jesse Palmer and Tim Tebow rocking the 5 day beard like they’re hung over and on their way to their basket weaving classes.  Or Matt Lauer and Carson Daly on the Today show looking like they’re on their way to a 420 rally.  It’s just so different from what I was used to growing up.  If someone came into school or work with a 5 o’clock shadow they were forced to either shave with cold water and a rusty razor or would be sent home for the day.  Now days it seems like it’s acceptable for reporters and employees to show up to work looking as if they have just been on a 5 day bender with some stink left on their face.  And am I complaining?  Absolutely not.

Working in fashion over the past years I have learned to abide by anything BUT the rules I was brought up with.  Do I agree with them?  Absolutely?  I think it makes a statement when a man shows up to work looking clean cut, clean shaven, and professional.

Am I being a hypocrite?  Probably.  Having to shave your face everyday does some serious wear and tear.  I don’t think men should have to be subdued to that kind of demand.  But I do think when you look at a guy in a suit who is clean shaven, you think, “Lawyer.  Banker.  Insurance Salesman.  Professional.”  To many people those professions can be better translated to: DOUCHE.  But to many, it symbolizes that you’ve got your shit together, whereas a guy in a suit with some scruff could be seen as, “Someone who cares but doesn’t actually care.  Someone making a failed attempt as a male model.  Someone who is so high up he just doesn’t give a shit and can do what he wants.”  Or better yet, a guy seen with scruff constantly can be viewed as, “A regular guy.”

Guys don’t like shaving so frequently and I am honestly glad to see the media and work places ease up on shaving policies.  I have buddies who grow beards left and right with work.  I always ask, “Doesn’t your boss get pissed with you showing up looking like a broken hearted, breakup victim who is too lazy to shave?”  Their response, “Nope.”

I love it.  However, I still admire seeing the old school natured folk like the Yankees and most news networks who demand clean shaven at all times.  It just kind of feels right.  The decision is yours folks.  Business owners all over are changing policies.  Where do you stand?

… I’m writing this article wearing a 2 week beard.

Getting Back Into the Swing of Things

So, yeah, I’ve been pretty MIA on this thing.  I want to get back into it though and fully plan to.  I’m going to try and provide entertaining posts that are short and to the point.  Time is precious.  I’m late on posting this, but was early on seeing it…

A new music video produced by the performer, Sia, features Shia LaBeouf and 12-year old Maddie Ziegler.

When I first watched this video, I saw the girl dancing and assumed she was similar to that of Haley Dunphy’s character in Modern Family, and looked 12, but in actuality was somewhere around 21.  Before recognizing the female star’s age, I admired the video.  I get a kick out of Shia LeBouf, the song is great, and the video seemingly served as a metaphor for relationship struggles that we’ve all gone through at some point or another.

After figuring out her age, I said to myself, “Here we go.”  Let the YouTube comments roll it, let the inappropriate blog posts fly.  I am going to stay out of the controversial commentary and just say they had to expect this video to stir up some drama.  It strikes some people as sexual and inappropriate and it hits others as artsy and beautiful.  Thoughts?

Live From Los Angeles

It has been a while…

I miss writing on this thing.  For a long time it was a hobby, then it became work, and then it became, well, not much.  But it was always fun.  I have recently moved to Los Angeles, California for career moves and for consistent 75 degree weather.  New York will always be my home, but I am on to another venture for now.

I am considering getting back into the blogging game, so stay tuned for some West Coast nonsense to come.
